Craig Kennedy - "The American Sherlock Holmes"
Created by Arthur B. Reeve - "The Father of Forensic Science"
Arthur B. Reeve was the genius of the early twentieth century. He took science of his day and allied it to the mystery and romance of detective fiction. Even to the smallest detail, every bit of his plots is worked out scientifically.
Beginning in 1910, Reeve has been astounding American readers with the adventures and exploits of his scientist/detective, Craig Kennedy. They marveled at the strange, new startling things that detective hero would unfold.
In the 60s, President John F. Kennedy popularized James Bond when he told the world he read Ian Fleming's books for relaxation. Years before that Presidents Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt announced they read detective fiction and the "Craig Kennedy" stories in particular.
Hollywood soon discovered this modern day hero and brought him to the silver screen. Audiences thrilled to his feats in the 1914 cliffhanger serial, The Exploits of Elaine which starred Pearl White. Several feature films and serials in both the silent and sound era followed, including one of the first talkies, "Unmasked" (1929) and "The Clutching Hand" (1935). Starting in 1951, two seasons of the television series "Craig Kennedy, Criminologist" came on the air. It was the first TV program filmed for prime-time syndication, and it ran in reruns for years thereafter and exposed a whole new generation to the exploits of America's first scientific detective.
Every story is based on science. Arthur B. Reeve used his background as a scholar and a trained scientist which gave him the basis to make his tales technically and scientifically accurate. His work with the Charity Organization Society of New York and as a reporter brought him into contact with the underside of life. He met the criminals of his day and others who committed strange odd acts that brought them notoriety. This combination made a series of detective fiction stories and novels extremely popular throughout the United States.
Craig Kennedy was acquainted with all the horrors of underworld thugs and "yeggmen" dips and gunmen. He thwarted their schemes with cleverness and science. He knew how to protect himself against "feminine wiles" and aimed revolvers. He was at home in the Park Avenue ballroom to the dives of Hell's Kitchen. All the twisted paths trodden by those who were skilled in the use of dope and disguise were as straight roads to him.
Craig Kennedy is a mastermind of all his tales-a man of science. A man of training. The man with the mile-a-minute brain. The day of the old-fashioned "tec" is over and the scientist has taken his place! Craig Kennedy acts quickly and thinks even more quickly and therefore, is bound to walk right into the heart of any one who reads his adventures.
The character "Craig Kennedy" along with the shorts stories, novels, novelettes, the television program and most of the feature films and serials, are owned by Kit Parker Films. |
